'LOVE IN LOCKDOWN' EPISODE 13: 'LOU'S BOOBS'
Who doesn't love a good boob? Especially when it's a crochet one. Even more so when purchasing one helps to raise money for charity.
In the current climate, lockdown has left many of us with some time to delve into trying new things, time to experiment and freedom to explore creativity, perhaps even set up a new business.
'Lou's Boobs' is a small business set up during lockdown by the young woman Lizzie Back. Purchased via Instagram, handmade crochet boob key rings for just £7 including postage, and with every purchase 10% goes to Cancer Research UK. With a range of colours, the boob can be accustomed to fit your fancy and as a key ring, attach to whatever you wish. Along with the boob key ring comes the backing card, on which reads a range of quotes from 'The world has gone tits up' to 'It's a bit nippy'. Amusing as well as beautiful creations.
You may want to treat yourself with one of these adorable accessories, something for yourself and giving a little to support the charity. You could also send one to a friend or family member as a thoughtful gift whilst in lockdown and unable to see them. It's no secret that we are all missing those close to us during this time, and a gift like this can be something to put a smile on their face, a unique surprise and a reminder that you are both thinking of them and love them.
IN CONVERSATION WITH LIZZIE BACK:
Lizzie Back, is an actor currently living in London, she learnt to croquet over lockdown and then began making crochet boobs!
'I started this business during this third lockdown', she shares. 'I was finding it difficult not seeing my friends and not just being able to pop round for a cuppa and I just wanted to be able to send them a little something to remind them how much they mean to me', she smiles. 'I was sick of spending all my money on Moonpig cards, and what do you do with a card once its opened? Its just sat there on the side!'
'I don’t think there is anything more exciting than having a little gift come through your letterbox, that you know has been handmade just for you', she grins. 'Knowing that someone has taken the time to send that to you, or you have treated yourself will definitely put a smile on your face, and then every time you get out your keys, boom there’s your daily reminder of how special you are.'
'Pre Covid I didn’t even know how to crochet', she admits. 'I decided to learn when I had to quarantine for 2 weeks after traveling for work and I knew I would be so bored being stuck inside. I ordered one hook and some yarn and made my first jumper!', she declares. 'Since then I have made 3 more jumpers and lots of hats and gloves for my family, and it wasn’t until the most recent lockdown that I became confident enough to actually sell my work', she explains. People kept telling me “you know you could sell this stuff, people would buy it” and so far they’ve been right!'
'As I’m making each boob I love imagining what peoples faces will be when they open it and know that someone has taken the time to show them how much they mean to them', she beams. 'Or even for someone who orders for themselves to have a little bit of homemade love from me. I also love that 10% from every purchase goes to Cancer Research. I know its very important to support charities during this pandemic as they are unable to hold their usual fundraisers, so any small thing that I can do I’m sure they’re grateful for.'
'I get lots of lovely feedback every time someone receives their boob. They always tag me on Instagram and thank me. I find it a massive compliment when people have been given a Lou’s Boob as a gift and they them contact me to order one for some other friends so they can pass the love on', she says.
'I’ve had to work hard to keep up my posts on Instagram and keep my content engaging. I’ve also learnt that every boob is unique and that’s ok, they are all perfectly different' she enlightens. 'I love taking the time to crochet these cute pieces, I find it very calming and it gives me something to focus on and work towards in a time where everything is so uncertain for everyone', she shares.
'You can buy a Lou’s Boob ( @lousboobs) via my Instagram page by DMing me. You will get to choose what colour combination you want your boob to be and also what you would like the message to say. They all cost £7 each which includes postage and 10% from every purchase goes to Cancer Research', she confirms.
'During this time remember you are loved, even though I know it’s hard to feel that because we can’t hug or pop round each others houses for a natter. Everyone is struggling, so reach out to your friends', she says. 'Tell them how much they mean to you, and how proud you are of them. You’ve all been working from home, baking, watching Netflix, and FaceTiming we’re all slowly getting through this. Keep your friends close (metaphorically! Lets keep 2m apart) and once this is over you’ll love each other even more because you did it together.'
